Coughs Coughs are one of the most common complaints. If dust or food particles enter the lungs, coughing acts as a protector. In the same way during a cold it prevents mucus from entering the air passages and causing infection. If you have a chesty cough, then suppressing this reflex action with cough mixtures can do more harm than good. A useful treatment, for a dry non-productive cough, is steam inhalation (described under Colds). Make an appointment to see your doctor if: ¨ coughing continues after a common cold has been cleared up. ¨ coughing produces yellow or green spit - which may mean that the lower air passages are infected. ¨ breathing is accompanied by a pain in the chest, or shortness of breath. ¨ coughing produces blood ¨ coughing is accompanied by a high temperature |
