Meningitis

 Meningitis is a rare condition which gets a lot of publicity. A person with meningitis can go from being fit and well to extremely ill within a few hours.  It begins with flu-like symptoms but quickly becomes more serious.

 The signs are:

¨      high temperature/fever

¨      severe headache

¨      vomiting

¨      neck stiffness

¨      dislike of bright lights

¨      drowsiness

¨      rash on body or limbs (tiny red/purple spots or bruises)

Babies with meningitis may stop wanting to feed and may be sick, have a blank expression or be drowsy and not easy to wake.  They may dislike being handled and may develop a rash.

You should call your doctor urgently if you are at all concerned.
